One of the most anticipated financial / monetary policy events of 2013 finally took place in December as the US Federal Reserve confirmed its intentions to begin tapering its massive bond buying programme, paving the way for the beginning of the end of Quantitative Easing in the US. Despite the event having been a source of fear for investors throughout the year, markets nevertheless greeted the formal confirmation with gusto. This reaction implies that market participants now feel that the time is right to begin the withdrawal of support measures, showing intrinsic confidence in the US recovery.
